(October 28th, 2018–Jersey City, NJ) Explore Middle School participated in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk at Lincoln Park.
Principal Krone and Supervisor Velazquez welcomed staff, students, and parents as they gathered together early Sunday morning to walk. Administrative Assistant, Michelene Calabrese noted that it is always important for the staff to participate in events with students and families outside of the school building. “It was nice to be out in the community as a team. I am always so proud to see students give up their free time for community service events.”
Student Council President Samantha Rice and Vice President Myles Morales were there to represent the student body. “When I ran for Vice President, I knew it was going to be my responsibility to be involved in all our school’s activities. I was so happy that this was our first event since my election because I have had many family members battle cancer. I was so happy with the turn out and that Explore was a part of it,” Myles Morales shared.
Fundraising efforts began weeks prior to the walk. Leading up to the event donations were made by staff, friends and family on Facebook. The Parents Student Association held a bake sale during “Open House” to raise funds and half of the after-school snack cart proceeds were donated as well. In the end, the Explore team raised $2,165.00.
President Samantha Rice told a group of her peers, “I was so happy that we exceeded our fundraising goal of $1,000. I hope that we inspire the students next year to raise even more money.”
“I’m incredibly proud of the Explore community’s commitment to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We placed 11 out of 203 teams in our fundraising efforts for the Hudson County walk in Lincoln Park. Thank you to all the parents, students, staff and friends of Explore Middle School who joined us for the walk and in our fundraising efforts,” Principal Allyson Krone shared.
